if you haven’t read our main recruitment page about what it’s like to work at the lang cat then do that first. It’s OK, we’ll wait.

Our insight business is going from strength to strength and so we’re looking for a market insight person to help us make sense of it all.

In this role you’ll work with other members of the consulting and insight team to gather, analyse, write about and present the tonnes of platform, investment, adviser sentiment and other market data we generate.

You’ll use our own primary resources, including designing and conducting research and insight exercises with our 1,500 strong adviser panel. You’ll crawl deep, deep inside our own Platform Analyser system to help both the lang cat and our clients. And you’ll be relentless, tireless and insatiably curious about what’s out there in terms of source material and secondary resources that might help.

That curiosity point is a big one. If you’re the kind of person who starts researching things and finds themselves down rabbit holes which end up illuminating the original subject in unexpected ways, then this could be for you. We don’t just want you to find stuff out; we want you to be able to draw inferences from it too. Help us see what we don’t see.

You’ll work directly with clients where appropriate, and will develop strong relationships over time with both them and the wider market. You’ll soon develop a black book of people who know things that you can tap up; you will often need to hit the phones to find out what you need to know and you can’t be shy about doing so. The lang cat’s own very comprehensive black book is at your disposal.

Your colleagues will quickly come to treat you as a centre of excellence and fountain of knowledge, so as well as client projects you’ll often need to come up with supporting data and interesting snippets for an article or a release our communications team may be working on.

You’ll also have a crucial role in producing the lang cat’s monthly and quarterly insight products including our Adviser Briefing and Platform Market Scorecard.

You’ll set time aside each week for undirected reading and research; we don’t know what we don’t know.

Although you’ll have to manage clients and yourself, you won’t have any line management responsibilities in this role.

This role is a mix of research and understanding. So it’s essential that you have an excellent understanding of the retail financial services space, and preferably of the intermediated long-term savings and investment market. We’ll test you out at interview stage.

You’ll need to be able to marshal and organise large amounts of information and data quickly; to interrogate all that and come up with not just the correct information but to analyse it and draw conclusions. We’ll test you out at interview stage.

You’ll need to be happy working with systems such as PowerBI and Surveymonkey; if you don’t know them already that’s OK but we will look for you to pick them up quickly.

Most of our clients want insight delivered via slides (some things never change) so you should have a high degree of confidence in Powerpoint. It’s unthinkable that you’d be able to do this job without good Excel skills too. We will ask you to write things, so although you don’t have to be a polished marketing communications guru – we have them already – you can’t be shy about picking up written work and doing it to the best of your ability. We’ll test you out…you guessed it…at interview stage.

At any given moment you could have four or five projects on your desk, so an ability to organise yourself, prioritise accordingly and meet your deadlines is a must.

The most important characteristic you’ll need, though, is a desire to get stuck in and a willingness to take a brief and have at it.

We have a very flat structure at the lang cat. That means we’ve got an open mind about what level of seniority you may have achieved in your last roles. You might have ‘specialist’ in your title, or ‘manager’, or whatever. If you think you’re a good fit, then you’re someone we want to hear from.

This is a full-time role based either at the lang cat’s beautiful, airy offices in Leith, Edinburgh, or your home office/spare bedroom (or a combination of the two) but with travel from time to time. If you love the look of the role but can’t do five days a week, still get in touch. We’re open to alternatives.

It’s a permanent role, but comes with a six month probationary period. Salary will depend on experience.

There’s a pension scheme (8% unconditional), a bonus scheme, life cover and you can have a holiday sometimes if you must.

When in Edinburgh you get access to the office Sonos on the understanding that ritual humiliation of your music taste will be guaranteed. The coffee is decent and plentiful. Sometimes there are biscuits.

We’re screwed, aren’t we? We’re aiming too high. It’s too much to ask. Does such a person even exist?

But…but…if we can find someone that ticks all these boxes, we can promise them a working environment unlike any they’ve had before. We can promise them flexibility in work patterns including the option to work predominantly from home – many of us have families and understand how hard it is to fit everything in. And we can promise that they’ll be joining a team which is growing, which enjoys a stellar reputation in its niche and which has a true intent to leave the industry better than they found it.

If that sounds like something that doesn’t frighten the hell out of you, then get in touch

And that’s it. Hope to hear from you all soon. Especially you
